Get REAL Expedition 2011
International Year of Forests 2011
Reboot Leadership in Kenya

Reboot Leadership and Reinvent Management while on safari with Samburu Warriors.

"What we are doing to the forests of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to one another." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

The Year 2011 has been declared the International Year of Forests by the United Nations. Get REAL 2011 - is in support of the International Year of Forests and follows in the footsteps of our Sinai Gulf to Gulf Expedition in support of the International Year of Biodiversity.

Get REAL 2011 is in collaboration with Lengthen Your Stride (LYS), Wild Frontiers (WF) and in support of the Milgis Trust conservation and community programmes and projects in the Samburu District of northern Kenya - on the edge of the Great Rift Valley.

There will be a few Get REAL Expedition dates to choose from. Only 12 participants (accompanied by the LYS team, WF team, expedition medics, 20 Samburu tribesmen, scouts, warriors and 35 camels) will be selected for each of the expeditions. During these 2 week expeditions - incredible territory, comprising of Lugga’s (seasonal rivers), semi desert/desert, foothills and forest capped mountains will be traversed and explored. Due to seasonal constraints and unpredictable changes in terrain each expedition will be taking the path least travelled and unique. Territory to be covered could include any of the following: the Matthews Range, the Ndotos Mountains, the Jade Sea / Lake Turkana, Mt. Nyiru (located on the edge of the Great Rift Valley - the sacred mountain of the Samburu people and the heart of their territorial homeland), Ol Donyo Mara, passing through the spectacular valleys of these dramatic 'Islands in the Desert’, as well as navigating a number of enormous luggas, including the great Milgis, Seiya, and Parsaloi. At the same time, team members will be exposed to and learn first hand about the conservation and community work undertaken by the Milgis Trust and the amazing work being done by the Milgis Scouts.

Get REAL Expedition 2011 Rationale:

The Samburu District is situated in the arid and semi-arid area of the Rift Valley Province of Kenya. The Lorroki Plateau in central Samburu acts as an important water catchment for the surrounding arid areas and serves as an area for dry season grazing for the Samburu people, who are pastoralists living in group ranches and whose trees and forests are managed as a communal resource providing grazing, firewood, building poles and medicines. Strong group rules enforced by appointed elders have traditionally been essential to the conservation and wise use of communal tree and forest resources. But these rules have been undermined by changes in resource management, forest use patterns, increasing population, overgrazing, displacements, droughts, cattle rustling and high urban demand for wood energy and building materials. These changes have led to desert conditions. The Milgis Trust works with the communities in interventions to combat desertification and have held many workshops to inform and educate communities about range rehabilitation within denuded community lands.

Conflicts between humans and wildlife have occurred since the dawn of humanity. In Africa, these conflicts have become more frequent and severe over recent decades as a result of human population growth, extension of transport routes and expansion of agricultural and industrial activities which together have led to increased human encroachment on previously wild and uninhabited areas. Read more about this critical issue addressed on the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organisation media page, and download their - How to Lessen Human-Wildlife Conflict in Africa tool kit.

Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) - is an effort to create a financial value for the carbon stored in forests, offering incentives for developing countries to reduce emissions from forested lands and invest in low-carbon paths to sustainable development. “REDD+” goes beyond deforestation and forest degradation, and includes the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks.
