Sinai-Gulf to Gulf 2009

Sinai - Gulf to Gulf - A 32 day expedition across the Sinai desert in support of the Int. Year of Biodiversity.

My inspiration for Lengthen Your Stride programmes originated in 1980 in Salt Lake City - when our good friend Betty-Jean Ingram arranged an audience with President Spencer W Kimball - for my wife Jean and I, and my first born son Garreth. The time spent with him was memorable, inspirational and motivational to say the least.

His parting words to me were: “... lengthen your stride. Inspire people to do likewise.” As if commanded by a four star general, my immediate response was: “ Yes sir !” He had that way about him.

Since then, I have embarked upon many “... lengthen your stride. Inspire people to do likewise.” adventures. I have celebrated many a successful adventure and learnt important lessons from numerous misadventures.

Some wisdom he also shared was: "Success is not measured in achievement of goals, but in the stress and strain of meeting those goals." Oh, so true - stress and strain abounds in the twenty first century - I have stumbled, tripped, endured scraped knees and elbows and been subject to a few bloody noses when taking a few bad detours. Fortunately his parting words ring loudly in my ears and continue to motivate me to fulfill the commitment I made to him on that cold December day.

Many a business leader and President have sought his counsel. One remarkable account is that of the great Norman Vincent Peale - author of the best seller, The Power of Positive Thinking, which has sold more than 20 million copies in 41 languages.

Norman Vincent Peale, a person one never thinks of as needing counsel, was struggling with a personal challenge and when near the end of his tether turned to Spencer W Kimball for guidance. Counsel and guidance was given. In Peale’s words, “ We said goodbye; I walked out into that crisp, sun-kissed morning and ... as I walked along, I suddenly felt the burden lift, and I saw the answer to the difficulty and I felt the victory.”

If only he were still alive - I would love to spend time with him atop camels and Mt. Sinai in Egypt , while on a Lengthen Your Stride journey.

Quotes by Spencer W Kimball:

"Life gives to all the choice. You can satisfy yourself with mediocrity if you wish. You can be common, ordinary, dull, colorless, or you can channel your life so that it will be clean, vibrant, useful, progressive, colorful, and rich."

"We learn to do by doing."

"We must be trained to clarify minds, heal broken hearts, and create homes where sunshine will make an environment in which mental and spiritual health may be nurtured. Our schooling must not only teach us how to bridge the Niagara River gorge, or the Golden Gate, but must teach us how to bridge the deep gaps of misunderstanding and hate and discord in the world."

"My life is like my shoes, worn out by service."

"It's not possible that the problems of this world be resolved by the pessimists and skeptics whose horizons are guided by the obvious realities. We need men and women who think of things that have never been thought of and who dream of things that have never been dreamed of, and who ask, "Why not

"Any excuse for nonperformance, no matter how valid, weakens character."

"The more we serve our fellowmen in appropriate ways, the more substance there is to our souls. We become more significant individuals as we serve others. We become more substantive as we serve others indeed, it is easier to “find” ourselves because there is so much more of us to find.”

"It is not so much what we know that is important, as what we are and what we do."

“The fact that some governments, churches and numerous corrupted individuals have tried to reduce such behavior from criminal offence to personal privilege dose not change the nature nor the seriousness of the practice. This woe is pronounced upon those who would pervert standards of mortality and decency. They seek man’s approval of that which God had condemned. They have been successful in getting legislation passed to make such perversion legal and acceptable by society."

“Make no small plans. They have no magic to stir men's souls."

This woe is pronounced upon those who would pervert standards of mortality and decency. They seek man’s approval of that which God had condemned. "We must not falter nor weary in well-doing. We must lengthen our stride and go the extra mile.”

Spencer W Kimball ( 1895 – 1985 ) was the twelfth president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, from 1973 until his death in 1985.
