“After living in, working and/or visiting over 57 countries, I would rather wake up in the wilderness than the best suite at the Ritz. To me, the ‘promised’ land is wilderness - it is a necessity of the human soul. It is the ideal place to explore the last frontier - the one between our ears. I admit, deserts are not for everyone - one person’s wilderness is another’s theme park. However, I hasten to add that no one should go through life without at least once experiencing the clarity of thought one derives from the solitude that wilderness provides. Dependent solely, on what you and your camels carry, everyday is a journey of self discovery. In the wilderness– SHIFT happens”. - Gary Waterworth Owen

For the past 30 years Gary has lived, painted, worked with and visited with many tribes around the world (including many western corporate tribes). The semi-nomadic Himba of Namibia, the Bushman of the Kalahari, the Samburu of northern Kenya and the Bedouin of Sinai, Egypt are those he has found to be the most resilient. A common factor is the respect and stewardship they all have for the most valuable resource on earth - clean water.

What he finds equally inspiring is that they never complain - they know who they are, where they are, what they want, where they’re going and they walk their talk.

Waterworth Expeditions run by Gary and his son - Garreth - (a highly qualified and experienced safari guide) expose participants to first hand knowledge about: * team building and leadership * what makes resilient communities * the urgent need to conserve wilderness areas * the impacts of climate change, * THIRST Things First * ‘cultural values and valued cultures’ * ‘ancient ways for modern days’ and then how to * lengthen your stride and walk your talk in all walks of modern tribal life.

Our journeys and expeditions are an extension of: Culture Conscious Conservation programmes established in 1999 - unique ‘indabas’ ( meetings ) that celebrate cultural diversity, identify common purpose and values, and search for responsible development solutions.

Take a quick look at what Waterworth Expeditions has to offer:

In 2004 - Gary Waterworth Owen FRGS ( Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society - RGS ) was the keynote speaker at the RGS Annual Explore Conference. At the conference, he also ran workshops on ‘how to record your travels and expeditions’ - take a look at the presentation below.

‘Once in the wilderness, one can observe that attitudes change significantly. Cultural differences become unimportant, barriers are removed and people begin to see each other as people.’  - Dr Ian Player.

“Man, the most endangered species, needs to commune with the wilderness if he is to preserve his wholeness.”  - Sir Lourens van der Post
