The 21st century demands that we Get Responsible, Environmentally Aware Leadership! If you or your company has what it takes to Get REAL, Reboot Leadership, Reinvent Management and sincerely desires to make a difference in the real world - join us on a unique ‘response-able’ path towards sustainability - in one of the most remote and spectacular regions of the world - north eastern Kenya. For the interest of corporate sponsorship see Embedding Cause into your Brand below. Get REAL 2011 is in support of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development and the UN International Year of Forests. Get REAL 2011 follows in the footsteps of our successful Lengthen Your Stride - Sinai Gulf to Gulf Expedition - in support of the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity. Get REAL 2011 combines our THIRST Things First , Support Our Scouts and Lengthen Your Stride (Leadership) programmes. Participating in Get REAL 2011 makes a direct contribution to the work of the Milgis Trust - our core partner. Everyone knows that forests and water are essential to the life of the planet and to the health and prosperity of humanity. However, increasing pressures of climate change, population growth, deforestation, agriculture, urbanisation, desertification and energy needs, are together placing unprecedented pressure on essential forests and our finite freshwater resources. We need to Get REAL and do something NOW! During these 2 week expeditions - led by Gary Waterworth Owen, Helen Douglas-Dufresne and our team of expert guides, Samburu tribesmen, scouts, warriors and a string of camels - incredible territory, comprising of Lugga’s (seasonal rivers), semi desert and desert, foothills and forest capped mountains will be navigated and traversed. Paths to Responsible, Environmentally Aware Leadership and Sustainability will be shared and explored and strategies examined on how best to embed and sustain corporate responsibility. Participants will learn first hand about Responsible Water Stewardship, Global Citizenship, Corporate Sustainability and Responsibility, Design for Social Impact, Climate Change, Biodiversity and Conservation. They will be inspired and equipped to return home, eager to embed effective and innovative solutions to the global challenges now confronting every individual, company and community on planet earth, while ever mindful that their time spent in north eastern Kenya, will have supported the host communities and helped make Samburu more sustainable. The Samburu District is situated in the arid and semi-arid area of the Rift Valley Province of Kenya. The Lorroki Plateau in central Samburu acts as an important water catchment for the surrounding arid areas and serves as an area for dry season grazing for the Samburu people, who are pastoralists living in group ranches and whose trees and forests are managed as a communal resource providing grazing, firewood, building poles and medicines. Territory to be covered includes the Matthews Range, the Ndotos Mountains, Mt. Nyiru (located on the edge of the Great Rift Valley - the sacred mountain of the Samburu people and the heart of their territorial homeland), Ol Donyo Mara, passing through the spectacular valleys of these dramatic 'Islands in the Desert’, as well as navigating a number of enormous luggas, including the great Milgis, Seiya, and Parsaloi. The video below provides a 2 minute insight into our 2 week Cause related expeditions - featuring a few of the water, health, education and conservation projects and programmes you and your company could support and get involved with.
And to wet your appetite a little more take a look at this video:
The Milgis Trust - A unique Community Based Development and Nature Conservation project. Strong group rules enforced by appointed elders have traditionally been essential to the conservation and wise use of communal tree and forest resources. But these rules have been undermined by changes in resource management, forest use patterns, increasing population, overgrazing, displacements, climate change, and high urban demand for water, food, energy and building materials. “The alarm bell keeps ringing and we keep hitting the snooze button. It’s time to wake up and Get REAL.” ~Gary Waterworth Owen
Get REAL 2011 is supported by ResponseAbility Alliance ally - Robert Swan OBE :
