Dr. Elbe Coetsee

Elbe is the Director of the Mogalakwena Craft Art Development Foundation and the author of: Craft Art in South Africa

Dr Elbe Coetsee has long had a passion for craft art, and completed a PhD at the University of Pretoria, researching the demographic characteristics and entrepreneurial attitudes of South African craft artists. This research took four years to complete, during which time she travelled extensively throughout South Africa, visiting all the major craft festivals and markets.

She acquired a sound knowledge and understanding of the very essence of the craft art industry and established the Mogalakwena Craft Art Development Foundation at the end of 1994 and initiated a craft centre to support the economic and social upliftment of the local Pedi community where she has created meaningful work in Limpopo where there are millions of unemployed people.

She has helped the local Pedi community to rediscover and develop craft skills such as beading, embroidery and weaving. She currently employs about 30 plus women at the project and is also implementing language, literacy, childcare and other skills development programmes.

As director of the Foundation, Elbe also consults, and develops and manages various job creation and empowerment projects in South Africa. Elbe and her family also own and run a holistic safari camp in the Limpopo River Valley and an art gallery in Cape Town.

The Mogalakwena Research Centre is an independent research entity based in the remote north-western part of Limpopo Province. The Research Centre was established in 2006, as part of the Mogalakwena Group, to document, to research and to further understanding and knowledge in the fields of ecology and anthropology in South Africa. Our research divisions are: biodiversity and ecology, culture and linguistics, design and craft art, and education and outreach.
